Air New Zealand has said that its failure to persuade the New Zealand government to require airlines flying in the country to replace some of their fossil fuels with sustainable fuels is one of the reasons why the company is abandoning its own 2030 climate targets, the Royal New Zealand News Network reports.
A spokeswoman for the airline told a conference that it would be required to use a percentage of sustainable fuels on return flights to almost every overseas port it flies to by 2030.
The airline previously abandoned its ambitious goal of reducing emissions by 29 per cent by 2030. The airline confirmed that it retains a separate target of using 10 per cent sustainable fuel on its aircraft by 2030.
