Local South African company Sasol plans to produce up to 650,000 tonnes of ‘green’ aviation fuel per year at its Secunda and Sasolburg synthetic fuels refineries, according to the Daily Maverick.
The company has confirmed plans to use South Africa’s new solar and wind farms to process hydrogen and recover carbon at one or both of its existing synthetic fuels refineries in the provinces of Pumalanga and the Free State to begin producing large quantities of SAF for the global market, and is reportedly confident that it could begin producing large quantities of hydrogen-based SAF for the global market in two to three years, subject to European Union regulatory approval.
The report also added that as part of its efforts to produce SAF for the global market, Sasol signed a joint venture agreement with Denmark’s Topsoe Technology Group last year.
